**First Time At Auction**
Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. early 20th century CE. A slightly curved steel dha blade with an upturned tip facing away from the cutting edge. An aluminum guard encircles the top of the tang, and the tang is covered by a long wooden hilt; shaped with incised rings and painted black with gold patterns. The sheath is also wood, painted with gold floral motifs down its length to a thin pointed tip. Four thin braided fibrous bands encircle the sheath next to a yellow cloth rope handle. Dha swords are meant for single-handed use despite the long hilt; a traditional southeast Asian weapon for martial arts, occasional warfare, and the more ornate ones, such as this beautiful example, act as status symbols. Size (with sheath): 35.25" L (89.5 cm); (length of blade): 16.25" L (41.3 cm)
Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in the early 1990s; ex-private Portland, Oregon, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
