East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century. A skillfully carved wooden seated male figure, likely representing an honored ancestor, donning a traditional long robe and a tall conical headdress, and holding a vessel in his left hand while raising his right hand. The naturalistic modeling of the figure's facial features, beard, and mustache is quite striking, as are the drapery folds and details of his robe. A wonderful piece. Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000.
