**First Time At Auction**
Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A skillfully carved stone pendant of a wadjet (or wedjat, "Eye of Horus"), a powerful ancient ocular symbol of protection. Naturally adorned in mottled hues of deep grey and warm tan, this apotropaic piece presents with a horizontal drill hole at its top for suspension. Please note that the suspension string is for photography purposes only. Size: 1.4" L x 1.2" H (3.6 cm x 3 cm)
According to the AMA Journal of Ethics, "The well-known symbol Rx may even be derived from Egyptian hieroglyphics. According to the legend, Horus, the god of sky and of light and the keeper of secret wisdom, sustained a terrible eye injury while seeking to avenge the murder of his father. Later, the eye was magically healed. The eye of Horus thus became a symbol of health, now recognized as Rx, and its placement by physicians on written prescriptions represents an appeal for the success of the recommended remedy."
Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York City, New York, USA
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
