First in-print appearance of Anton Chekhov's last play (pp. 29-106 of the Sbornik). Written in 1903, The Cherry Orchard was first performed in the Moscow Art Theater in January 1904. A few months later, Chekhov lost his battle with tuberculosis. Meanwhile, his play became and instant success with the Russian theater audiences. The popularity of Chekhov's play only grew with time, becoming an international phenomenon. Now, more than a century later, The Cherry Orchard continues to appear in theater repertories all around the world.

This book was issued in two volumes, both originally were printed as softwraps. The copy offered here is a rebind of volume II in brown boards with a quarter leather spine and gilt titles. The interior pages are overall quite clean, however are toned, with intermittent handling marks. The front board is splitting along the seam, and is heavily rubbed to the spine, edges and corners. The corners are worn and bumped.
Aside from the Chekhov's famous play, issue 2 of the 1903 Zhaniye Sbornik also featured Mirnoye Zhit'yo [A Peaceful Living] by Alexandr Kuprin (1890-1937), as well as an important novel Evrei [The Jews] by Solomon Yushkevich (1864-1927), that had shocked the progressive Russian public by describing the horror of anti-Jewish violence in Tsarist Russia.
