Description
This lot consists of an unframed gouache on cardboard, rendered in the modern style of artist Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884-1920). "Modigliani" is hand-written at bottom left. Image depicts a young woman with brown hair. Her face is long and ovular. This painting is done in the modern, streamlined style for which Amedeo Modigliani is so well beloved. Overall unframed measurements approximately 13" x 9.5".
Reverse side of piece features a small, circular stamp at center. Reads, in part, "PARIS - 116".
Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884-1920) was an artist active during the early 20th century, best known for the elegant portraits he created. He led a fascinating bohemian life, a far cry from his bourgeois upbringing. Modigliani's art career took him all over Europe, where he also wrestled with the hardships of poverty, addiction, and illness. The figures in his paintings are otherworldly, often long-necked and haunting. Frida Kahlo, Juan Gris, and Pablo Picasso were among the familiar faces (even the painted subjects) in Modigliani's world. In the end, his self-destructive tendencies were his undoing. Modigliani never lived to enjoy artistic success, and, with utmost irony, is now among the most celebrated painters of his era.
