Item Details
Description
This lot consists of a framed, hand executed oil and possibly gouache on thin board, rendered in the modern style of artist Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884-1920). "Modigliani" is hand-written at top left. Image depicts a brown-haired woman with pupil-less, almond-shaped eyes. Her neck and upper torso are elongated. The space around the woman's portrait is empty and placid. The viewer is immediately drawn into the woman's beauty and elegance. This painting is done in the modern, streamlined style for which Amedeo Modigliani is so well known. Piece would be a highlight to any modern art collector's gallery. This framed piece measures approximately 25.5" x 21.5", with an image sight of approximately 18.75" x 14.75".

Paper label affixed en verso reads "M. KNOEDLER & CO." along with a New York address. Further information lists the title as "Portrait of a Woman by Amedeo Modigliani" and states it was "Executed: 1918".

A second affixed paper label reads "Kunsthalle Bern" and an ink stamp reads "PERLS GALLERIES". Hand writing in ink reads "Property of Blickman (Modigliani)".

Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884-1920) was an artist active during the early 20th century, best known for the elegant portraits he created. He led a fascinating bohemian life, a far cry from his bourgeois upbringing. Modigliani's art career took him all over Europe, where he also wrestled with the hardships of poverty, addiction, and illness. The figures in his paintings are otherworldly, often long-necked and haunting. Frida Kahlo, Juan Gris, and Pablo Picasso were among the familiar faces (even the painted subjects) in Modigliani's world. In the end, his self-destructive tendencies were his undoing. Modigliani never lived to enjoy artistic success, and, with utmost irony, is now among the most celebrated painters of his era.
