Description
A large Japanese lacquered dowry chest from the Edo period, early to mid-19th century, with the “Mon” or symbol of the Tokugawa Shogun Clan. Of unusually generous proportions, with a slightly domed lid. Large handles on the side were used for carrying the bridal trousseau. The hinges are constructed in such a way that the lid can be slid off after opening, for easier access. Nicely decorated bronze hardware and vivid painted decoration. 30" h x 66" w x 26.5" d
