Description
1572 PLUTARCH Moralia Parallel Lives On Fate Stoicism Philosophy Estienne
“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.”
― Plutarch
Plutarch was one of the most iconic 1st-century philosophers, best known for his ‘Parallel Lives’. Also known as ‘Plutarch’s Lives’, this work is one of the most important and comprehensive collection of biographies of famous Greek and Roman figures. The other surviving work of Plutarch was ‘Moralia’ – a collection of seventy-eight various essays and transcribed speeches each of which provide an understanding of Roman and Greek life in the 1st-century AD.
These three tomes are from one of the rarest and most desirable editions of Plutarch, the 1572 Henri Estienne complete works of Plutarch. This set includes portions of ‘Moralia’, annotations and appendices of ‘Lives’, as well as shorter and lesser-known works such as ‘Amatorius’ – a biographical account of Plutarch’s son, Autobulus, and descriptions of bizarre events occurring in the town of Thespiae. (Rist). Other works (which are included in ‘Moralia’) found in this set include:
“Symposiacon”
“On Fate”
“Platonic Questions”
“Against the Stoics”
It should be noted that scholars agree on only two works being attributed to Plutarch – ‘Moralia’ and ‘Lives’. All others, including those found in this set, are falsely attributed to Plutarch, and are considered to be written by ‘Psuedo-Plutarch’ – unknown, anonymous authors from the 1st to 4th-centuries.
