Description
This is a large Sumba ceremonial textile known as a Lau Hada, a ritual cloth from East Sumba Island, Indonesia. The textile has been embellished with Nassa Shells and a beautiful pattern and design of a Horned ancestral spirit flanked by serpents and a Lobster, birds that represent the spirit world and fertility symbols such as the Mamuli and the phallus. This textile measures 52 inches tall x 25 inches wide and was part of the permanent display at the Metamora Museum of Oddities, Metamora, Indiana.
