Description
A terracotta skeleton idol attributed to the Aztec culture and possibly an effigy to Mictlantecuhtli, Aztec god of the dead. This God ruled Mictlan, the underworld. The souls of those whose manner of death was by war, sacrifice, childbirth, drowning, lightning, and certain diseases made a four-year journey, fraught with trials, through the nine hells of Mictlan. In the last, where Mictlantecuhtli lived, they either were vanished for eternity or found rest. The clay figure measures 7.5 inches and was part of the permanent display at the Metamora Museum of Oddities, Metamora, Indiana.
