Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater in the form of a charming rabbit with four legs tucked beneath the stocky body, a large ovoid head, and a raised tail on the posterior. The rabbit's head is defined by a pair of lengthy ears, a slender nose, a pair of inlaid spherical glass eyes, and a serrated iron grating tool protruding from the mouth. Faint areas of original white, red, and pink pigment are visible across the body, and fine patina envelops this wonderful example of utilitarian Southeast Asian artistry! Size: 24.25" L x 8" W x 8.75" H (61.6 cm x 20.3 cm x 22.2 cm).

Condition
Section of new wood along front feet for stabilization. Fading to original pigmentation, light encrustations within some recessed areas, and slight bending to iron grating tool. Nice earthen deposits, faint traces of original pigment, and great patina throughout.
