Description
English Liverpool creamware tankard, circa 1800.
The tankard has a beautifully detailed black transfer print of the Wearmouth Bridge, built in 1796 to span the River Wear in Sunderland, England.
The print is labelled "A South East view of the stupendous iron bridge over the Wear ... " The view shows the bridge and toll houses, a variety of ships and boats, the city in the background, men working on the shore, etc. Two span (236 Feet) and the height (100 feet) are listed in reserved circles. Indeed, the bridge was considered one of the wonders of the world when it was built.
The tankard is in wonderful condition: no damage, beautifully glazed, and a crisp clear print. The tankard is flared at the foot and rim.
