Description
Extraordinary carved and painted Northwest Coast "Lightning Serpent" forehead Mask circa 1930's. Constructed of box wood with bas relief carving giving the mask an "Art Deco" appearance. Tuffs of cedar bark decorate the crown. For the Nuu-chah-hulth, a headdress like this would be part of the regalia worn by ceremonial dancers. Lightning snakes assist the Thunderbird, a different supernatural creature who hunts whales, by stunning the whales before the Thunderbird attacks. Measures 21" length x 11" width x 9" height. Ex lifetime collection from a Midwest estate.
