ENGLISH STAFFORDSHIRE PEARLWARE HAND-PAINTED CERAMIC MEDICI LION FIGURE, standing on oval base, having front left paw on a yellow ball, tail curled onto back with mouth agape, decorated in the round. Base open-bottomed. First quarter 19th century. 5 3/8" HOA.
Excellent visual condition, having some professional restoration including tail and paint touch-ups.
Literature: Parallels Halfpenny - English Earthenware Figures, 1740-1840 p. 196, fig. 53 bottom lower left.
Provenance: From the James Dunn collection, Springfield, VT.
Catalogue Note: The lion with paw on a ball is based on the marble lion statues that stand guard at the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, Italy.
