Description
Ulysses S. Grant Letter Signed as President. One page on Executive Mansion letterhead, 5.25" x 8.5"; October 19, 1875. A thank you letter to Silas H.H. Clark, General Superintendent of the Union Pacific Railroad: "I avail myself of the first leisure since my return to thank you for the many courtesies extended to me and my party while passing over the road under your charge…" In the summer of 1875 Grant decided to take an extensive trip out west by rail. He departed for his trip in September, and chose Union Pacific as the rail road that would take him on his trip. This despite the scandal that rocked his administration towards the end of its first term. Union Pacific was a major railroad involved in building the transcontinental railroad. The railroad executives set up Credit Mobilier as a construction company to allow them to bilk the U.S. Government through phony billing. The front company presented invoices to Union Pacific and the railroad would forward the billing to the federal government. Several members of Congress were known to have taken bribes to give Union Pacific favorable votes in Congress. Schuyler Colfax, Grant’s Vice President, was caught up in the scandal and was dropped from the ticket in 1872 as a result. Despite public appearances, Grant chose Union Pacific as the railroad that would take him out west. Matted and framed to the overall size of 13.25" x 16.5". Condition: Heavily toned, with bold ink.
