Description
Gabriele d'Annunzio Autograph Letter Signed. Six pages, 9.5" x 13"; May 29, 1932. With the salutation and closing in English and the body of the letter in French, the letter references the eye wound which d'Annunzio suffered in aerial combat during World War I. In part: "Dear friend, beloved comrade, darling brother of my winged Will, I offer you, to you and to your men – to all those who have doubled the wooden fibers of their nerves and the iron nails of their nurtured ardors – I offer you the ‘squares of fortune' painted by me in my colors of Montenevoso and in my new emblem of Buccari. I pray you to give two of them – red and blue – to lord Wakefield of Hyte. I beseech him to persist in his admirable effort. Your promise is indeed his promise; his assurance is indeed your assurance... On you return I will be cured. I am suffering from iodine intoxication; which is useful to me in activating the circulation in the wounded eye – wounded sixteen years ago – ‘in commanded service.'" Signed, "Gabriele d'Annunzio." Condition: Bright paper, with bold ink. Gently age toned at the edges. Slight creasing to the top corners of the first page. Minimal soiling throughout, with ink splotches scattered, especially on versos.
