John F. Kennedy (1961-63)Golf DoodleNo place, ca. 1963. 1 p. 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 in. (184 x 114 mm). Original doodle in graphite, by Kennedy, of a putter and ball, with two smaller doodles at top left, "1964" top right, and initialed "J.F.K." at bottom right; on his gold-embossed "Aboard Air Force One" stationery. Lot includes a black and white photograph of JFK golfing.JFK is often considered the best golfer to occupy the Oval Office, at times described as playing with a single digit handicap. This original doodle, sketched sometime while aboard Air Force One, illustrates Kennedy's passion for the game. He often fit speed rounds into his schedule while traveling the country.Originally in the collection of Kennedy's longtime friend and colleague, Congressman Michael J. Kirwan of Ohio (1886-1970). Kirwan and JFK worked together from 1947, when Kennedy was first elected to Congress, until his death in 1963.Provenance: Mrs. Michael J. Kirwan, thence by gift to present owner.
