John F. Kennedy (1961-63)Photograph of President Kennedy's Dogs(Washington, D.C.), December 2, 1961. Gelatin silver print, depicting President Kennedy's two dogs, Pushinka and Charlie. Inscribed for his birthday to Kennedy staffer Sanford Fox, and "signed" with each dogs paw print. 11 3/4 x 14 1/4 in. (298 x 361 mm). Unexamined out of frame.Pushinka (right) was gifted to Caroline Kennedy by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in 1961. Pushinka's mother, Strelka, and another dog, Belka, were the first living creatures to orbit the earth and survive, when sent into space aboard Sputnik 2 in 1960. Later in 1961, Pushinka and Charlie (left) had a litter of puppies, affectionately called the "pupniks" by John F. Kennedy and his family.Sanford Fox (1919-1996) was the Chief of the Social Entertainments Office, and oversaw the planning of events in the Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford administrations.
