Description

Queen Victoria Hair Relic & "Privy Council Office" Stationery Inscribed with 3 Words in Her Hand

An artfully arranged homage to Victoria I (1819-1901), comprised of a strand of her hair, a piece of stationery inscribed in her hand, and an engraving of the young queen by G.E. Perine & Company of New York. The items are matted and displayed behind glass. Not examined out of the frame. The overall frame size is 24.875" x 18" x .875."

The lot includes:

1. A single strand of Victoria's hair, displayed in a windowed reliquary at center. The hair is accompanied by high-quality photo-reproductions of provenance material certified by Charles Hamilton, Handwriting Expert, and Louis Mushro, lifetime member of The Manuscript Society. The reliquary measures 1.375" x 1.75."

2. A piece of paper inscribed in Victoria's handwriting as "Arthur Helps / Esq" at the top above a black embossed "Privy Council Office" seal. The remaining manuscript words--including "The Queen" and, on the opposite side of the paper fragment, "The Queen / Windsor Castle / Address"--are in another hand. Expected paper folds and a few pin holes, else near fine. Sight size: 7.25" x 2.75."

Arthur Helps (1813-1875) was appointed Clerk of the Privy Council in 1860. Both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert purportedly admired Helps for his diligence and discretion. In 1862, a year after Albert's death, Helps edited a volume of his speeches. Victoria bestowed upon Helps a Kew Gardens residence in acknowledgement of this tribute to her beloved husband.
