Description
Spenser, Edmund. THE FAERIE QUEEN: THE SHEPHEARDS CALENDAR: TOGETHER WITH OTHER WORKS… COLLECTED INTO ONE VOLUME…. [London]: By H. L. for Mathew Lownes, 1611-12 [i.e. likely 1615.] 10.25" x 7". Complex collation (see end of this description for details), lacks one dedication leaf and final blank, else complete. Bound in early 1/4 calf over marbled boards. ********************** EDITION: This is the third reissue of the 1609 edition; the date of 1615 is conjectured by STC. B3r stanza 1 begins "Young Knight". Part 2 still has separate title page dated 1612 or 1613 (stop-press variants, 1613 in this example) and R3r catchword reads "And". ESTC S123122; STC 23084. ************ PROVENANCE: Engraved bookplate of Earl Fitzwilliam and of Milton, Peterborough. This appears to be the same copy sold by Sotheby's in the year 1918 lacking the title-page (thus the title-page here has been supplied from another copy at some point over the last 100 years.) ************* COLLATION NOTES: The Faerie Queen is here bound after several other works, as normally issued (each with separate title-pages) including, and in this order, The Shepheards Calendar, Proposoia or Mother Hubberds Tale, Colin Clouts Come Home Againe, and "A letter of the authors, expounding his whole intention in the course of this worke" with caption title, and separate register. Colin Clouts, which is 136 unnumbered pages, contains within itself numerous works each with separate title-pages. The Faerie Queen follows the above though its title-page is here found at the front of the volume (laid down and chipped) and in its place a manuscript divisional title-page is also bound in later at the beginning of The Faerie Queen. The volume in its entirely collates thus: [10], 56, [2], 16, [136]; [2, title of Faerie Queen, bound at front], [16], 363, [1] pp.
Condition
Boards with chips near top, scuffed, rubbed and worn. Front hinge cracked but boards are holding. Title is detached, chipped, dust-soiled, and laid down. Contents are mostly rather clean with some light foxing or the occasional minor stain, old marginal paper repairs to a few leaves at the beginning of The Faerie Queen, one leaf of Shepheards Calendar with marginal chip (no loss), last few leaves with small marginal tear near head and slightly bumped upper corners. As-is.
