Description
1862 Mather WITCHCRAFT Salem Witch Trials PURITAN Wonders of Invisible World
Cotton Mather’s book ‘The Wonders of the Invisible World’ is one of, if not the best and most authoritative book on the history of the Salem Witch Trials. This book is essentially the literary form of a witch-hunt focusing heavily on the evils of witchcraft and the sorcerous magic that witches performed in the Puritan colony. Mather, along with other authors such as Joseph Glanville, believed that the persecution of witches was a way of preserving the Puritan life that God intended.
Originally published in 1693, ‘Invisible World’ included accounts and testimonies of individual witches, calling them by name, and stating their sins. And while Mather claimed to be an unbiased historian, this book quite clearly shows his position against witches and witchcraft in colonial America.
Per ‘Library of Old Authors’,
“First lengthy account of the judicial murders of the so-called Salem witches…the classic example of religious frenzy sanctifying intolerance and delusion.”
