Increase Mather was important Puritan minister whose was a notorious figure in the Salem Witch Trials. He was controversially disliked by many for his adamant plea to defend the accused. He preached out against the executions as well as against witchcraft. He also published a work entitled ‘Remarkable Providences’ (1684) in which he thoroughly describes the state of colonial life in Massachusetts before the Witch Trials from a Puritan perspective. He tells stories of the supernatural, instances of miracles, and prophetic signs. The most important portion of this book is the section devoted to witchcraft and demonology.
