Increase Mather was important Puritan minister whose was a notorious figure in the Salem Witch Trials. He was controversially disliked by many for his adamant plea to defend the accused. He also published a work entitled ‘Remarkable Providences’ (1684) in which he thoroughly describes the state of colonial life in Massachusetts before the Witch Trials from a Puritan perspective. He tells stories of the supernatural, instances of miracles, and prophetic signs. The most important portion of this book is the section devoted to witchcraft and demonology.
