Description
San Raymond de Fitero (died 1163), founder of the Order of Calatrava at Calatrava la Viejas, Castile Spain in Sept of 1124, as an Abbot leading Lay Brothers (mostly ex-knights) against the Moors, confirmed by Pope Alexander III, for King Alfonso VII of Castile. His Cult was approved by the Roman Catholic Church in 1713, which is about the time this painting was done. He is depicted with the Order Insignia on his cloak. Oil on coarse canvas, unsigned, unframed, 31" x 24 1/2". Relined, cleaned and restored. Loss to lower right corner. Marked on stretcher "Comprado por C. de Kanter, April 1965 - T. Aranzana, 1965".
