Sam Newton (American; Florida, born 1948). Original oil painting on board. Florida landscape, a central winding river populated with abundant water birds and flora, including large cypress and palm trees The colorful pink, peach, and white clouds are reflected on the water surface. Signed lower right S. NEWTON. Along with his brother Harold Newton, Sam Newton was an original member of The Florida Highwaymen, young 1950s and 1960s era African American landscape artists mentored by Albert Ernest (Beanie) Backus (American, 1906-1990), who was regarded as the Dean of Florida Painters. Presented in a rustic period wood frame. Good overall condition, with normal wear to frame. Measures 24 in. x 30 in. (board), 29 1/2 in. x 35 1/4 in. (framed). Hill Auction Gallery will not ship.
