Highly Ovoid Alkaline Glazed Stoneware Jug With Stepped Spout.
c. 1855.
13” h.
Shoulder incised in large script with initials “LM” along with two slash marks and three marks indicating capacity.
Excellent heavy alkaline glaze with high gloss and appealing color variations including streaky runs extending from the shoulder to the midsection. Professional repairs to spout and handle.
Beautiful display piece.
Provenance: A private Southern collection.
Made at Lewis Miles’ Stony Bluff Manufactory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855.

David Drake, also known as Dave the Potter and Slave Dave (c. 1801-1870), was an American potter who lived in Edgefield, SC. Dave produced alkaline-glazed stoneware jugs between the 1820s and the 1860s. An enslaved African American, he often signed his works "Dave." He is recognized as the first enslaved potter to inscribe his work, during a time when most slaves were illiterate.
