Up for Auction is The Sole Finest Known 1873-p Closed 3 $20 Liberty Double Eagle in Existence. The Philadelphia Mint mainly coined Open 3 doubles eagles in 1873, while the San Francisco Mint produced mostly Closed 3 twenties. Both issues are plentiful, representing the two collectible double eagle issues for the year, but the 1873-S Closed 3 is many times rarer in high grades. Examples are scarcely seen above MS61, and there are probably only five or so examples that meet the requirements for an MS63 assessment. I have included both an example of one of these ms63 cons as well as the Lone ms63+, which I may add had previously been in an NGC ms63 Holder and resubmitted to get the ms63+. In my opinion none of these cins deserved anything higher than an ms62, but due to the incredibly scarcity of any decent Mint state survivors, I suspect the bar was significantly Lowered. The coin at hand is stunning and well earns the ms64 Designation and puts it leaps and bounds ahead of the lone ms63+. The surfaces are Highly lustrous. The fields smooth and pleasing. It has normal abrasions for the grade. And the Highly Lustrous Golden Orange surfaces are exactly what one would expect from a solid ms64 example. This coin has been in a private collection for the last 50 Years and has not seen the market in all that time. It is Sandi and my great pleasure and honor to bring it to our audience.
