***Auction Highlight*** 1907-s TOP POP! Gold Liberty Double Eagle $20 Graded ms65+ By SEGS. Up for Auction is a SUPER 1907-s $20 Double Liberty, Tied for Finest Known. This San Francisco issue is a significant condition rarity in the Liberty Head series. Although more than 2.1 million pieces were minted, fewer than 30 pieces are certified in Gem condition, with no examples numerically finer. Most of the mintage remained in the U.S., where it was used for backing Gold Certificates.Most show heavily abraded surfaces or light circulation; the average certified survivor is a tad less than MS62. The fields on the obverse of this Gem+ SEGS example are remarkably smooth and nearly abrasion-free; with none worth of individual mention. A strong strike with no weakness showing in the peripheral stars along the obverse rim. Ful Medial Lines in al the stars. The reverse is equally nicely preserved and equally as well struck.As a final-year issue in the Liberty Head series, it is possible the San Francisco Mint turned its attentions elsewhere and used little care in releasing the freshly minted coins into commerce or storage. As we said, most survivors are heavily bag marked. Luckily, there are a few exceptions and this coin is one of them. I have included an ms65 example for your comparison and the other ms65+ though it has never come to auction. Please note the few scattered marks on the right obverse field and on the crown and Miss Liberty's cheek on the other ms65+. More than comparable to the example at hand.
