The 1876 Centennial date and the widely pursued Carson City mintmark makes this issue a collector favorite, struck in the generous amount of 138,441 coins. The number of coins struck likely had nothing to do with the Centennial save indirectly, as the Carson City Mint struck their gold coins according to the deposits they received and to the depositors' specifications -- although it is conceivable that double eagles might have been especially popular for the Centennial.
