Description
***Auction Highlight*** 1805 BD-1 Draped Bust Gold Half Eagle $5 Graded ms63+ By SEGS. 1805 $5 Draped Bust Gold Half Eagle, BD-1 Variety, ms63+ SEGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. According to Mint records, a nominal mintage of 33,183 Capped Bust Right half eagles was achieved in 1805, but it is possible that some of these coins were dated 1804. There are five die varieties known for the date, with this coin representing the most available BD-1 variety, characterized by the perfect 1 in the close date, the leaf touching I in AMERICA, and the letters IT in UNITED being spaced close together. John Dannreuther estimates the BD-1 variety accounted for 10,000-15,000 pieces of the original mintage, with a surviving population of 175-225 specimens in all grades. Examples in Choice Mint State condition are rare. The present coin is an impressive Choice example, with well-detailed design elements and especially vibrant mint luster. The attractive greenish-gold surfaces display only minor contact marks, with faint traces of adjustment marks in the clouds on the reverse. Eye appeal is outstanding. Tied for 19th Finest. We have included another ms63+ for your comparison. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin
