Description
Created by a Village Blacksmith, This is a very fine old example of a Opa Osanyin or Herbalist staff from the Yoruba peoples. The Yoruba believe that To cure or protect villagers from mental and physical illness caused by spirits and individual forces, Yoruba diviners (babalawos) enlist the help of Osanyin, the god of divination or Erinle, the god of herbal medicines. This staff is placed on Osanyin altars and is used during the divination process to cure afflictions (usually placed in the ground next to the afflicted person). The Yoruba believe that a large bird surrounded by smaller birds symbolizes the power of good over evil and the ability to control spirits and supernatural forces. This staff has been custom mounted and measures 24 inches tall.
