Item Details
Description
Japan, Muromachi Period , ca. 1500. Figure of Seitaka-Doji (powerful boy) "Guard to the Buddha." Piercing glass eyes, separately-carved spear, and raised patterns on robe. Remains of polychrome. Original rock-work base. Purchased in Kyoto on Aug. 8, 1962 from K. Imai (see photocopy of receipt).

Ex: Estate of Diran Dohanian, distinguished art historian and Asian art specialist. Most of Professor Dohanian's collection was formed in the 1960s-70s, beginning when he was residing in India conducting research for his book, "The Mahayana Buddhist Sculpture Of Ceylon." He later developed a keen interest in Japanese and Chinese scroll paintings, a number of which are included here.
