Published in ‘The Atlas Universal Paris’. Vaugondy came from a family of famous French mapmakers, descendent of Nicolas Sanson. Decorative cartouche with a native and alligator. Surrounded by fruits and vegetables. Maps shows a South America before the wars of Independence. Patagonia is called ‘Terre Magellanique’. A fictional lake is still shown on the center of the continent. Despite a few unknowns the map is very detailed and highly accurate for the time. Brazil is shown without most of its present Amazon territory. Important note on condition * Condition is fair only, damages in many locations. Tiny holes. Mostly covered by tape on verso. Strong crease marks and folds. Inspect pictures carefully. Suitable for framing. Measures 23 x 18 1/2”. Some hand coloring. Copperplate engraved. Authenticity Guaranteed.
