Description
***Auction Highlight*** 1803 Large 3 BB-255 Draped Bust Dollar $1 Graded xf details By USCG. Nicely struck and pleasing for the designated grade and having an interesting 35 degree counter clockwise die rotation. BB-255 was likely the variety delivered in 1804, the end of business strikes for the Draped Bust series. Bowers Die State III. The Large 3 in the date, the Normal T in LIBERTY, and the upright of E in STATES positioned left of a cloud space identifies the variety. Additionally, though not often mentioned, the 3 in the date is strongly doubled. A spike in the price of silver at the start of the nineteenth century led to large-scale melts of silver dollars, which were now worth more in silver value than face value. Production of the denomination began to wind down and the 1803-dated pieces were the denomination's swan song for circulation until the 1830s. In total, 85,634 coins were struck with the 1803 date including 19,570 actually coined in 1804. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win Coin
