Item Details
Description
ACOMA POLYCHROME OLLA: PARROT-STYLE by JESSIE CONCHA GARCIA, ca. 1965 Condition: Excellent Mark: Painted on bottom: "Jessie Garcia / Acoma N. Mex." Description: The pot differs from the typical: The orange-buff color is lighter than usual, which is exaggerated because of being painted on the pink-buff body. The typical buff slip is not used on the upper inside of the pot, nor at the bottom of the pot. Most parrot pots have a "rainbow band", curving over or under the two parrots. The parrots on this pot are framed by the black patterns typical of Acoma pots. Note: Made by Jessie Concho Garcia, (1930s-1991), Sun Clan. Her mother was Juana Garcia. (1) Acoma & Laguna Pottery by Dillingham, p 169, says "Three Acoma potters who made particularly important contributions to the art of pottery making during 1950-1970 were Marie Chino, Jessie Garcia, and Lucy Lewis.” (2) See 2000 Artists, p. 134. Her work is in the Smithsonian. Her mother-teacher was Juana (Joanna?) Garcia. (3) Allan Hayes, the dealer, said that Jessie Garcia was as important as Chino and Lewis, but not as famous. She was more experimental. (4) Hayes (dealer) wrote the book Southwestern Pottery, and on p. 49, center pot, has a Lucy Lewis parrot that is almost identical to this. (5) Generations in Clay, p.39-40. The heart-line motif probably originated with the Navajos or Apache. Note that pairing the parrot with wildly asymmetrical patterns instead of the usual, symmetrical rainbow band is very experimental. 10"d x 8.25"h.
