Society of Antiquaries.- Aungier (John James, clerk, forger) 26 Autograph Letters signed to John Bruce & 2 others by Aungier, c. 55pp., 8vo & smaller, [London], 1834 & 1840-43, principally concerning Aungier's work as a researcher and transcriber for the Camden Society, with notes on payments etc., removed from an album, folds, browned; and 3 other related pieces including: Manuscript declaration signed and sealed by by George, Earl of Leicester, and Sir Henry Englefield, president and vice president of the Society of Antiquaries, concerning Thomas Richard Underwood, draughtsman to the society, noting that his absence is "of great inconvenience and disadvantage" and hoping for his early return "in order that he may resume the Functions of his Office" [Underwood was a prisoner on parole in Paris, 1803-14]; and 2 ALs.s. from Andrew White Tuer to J.W. Ebsworth arranging a first meeting and Tuer's election to the SA, folds, browned, v.s., v.d. (31 pieces).

⁂ In 1845 Aungier was convicted of forging cheques with the intent to defraud John Gough Nichols, in order to pay his gambling debts and was sentenced to Transportation to Australia.
