Audubon Bien Edition, John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851), "Brown Pelican," Plate 423, No. 12-1 from The Birds of America, No. 1, Chromolithography by Julius Bien (American, 1826-1909), printed by Roe Lockwood and Son, New York, 1860. Inscribed below image lower left "Drawn from Life by J.J. Audubon, F,R,S.F,L,S," upper left "No. 12-1", lower middle "Brown Pelican Pelecanus Fuscus Male Adult," lower right "Chromolithy. by J. Bien , New York 1860," upper right "Plate 423" to upper right. Framed approximately 52" x 39.5", sight approximately 37.5" x 25.75".
Condition
Edges have been trimmed down, sheet dimensions are approximately 39.5" x 26.25". Not laid down. Creasing to sheet, with large areas of foxing. Tears to edges, ranging from 0.5"-2", with some losses to edges of paper. Could benefit from cleaning and some conservation. No other visible signs of damage or repair.
