Description
Gignoux, Regis (French/American, Hudson River School, 1816-1882), Rapids Rocks and Trees, oil on canvas, c.1855, unsigned, 12.25 x 15.5 inches in a plain wood frame, canvas stamp of Edward Dechaux, New York, on reverse. Title attributed from Gignoux's own notebook where he recorded all of his works and sales -- this one with his inventory number 267 on the reverse. Gignoux primarily painted scenes in New York State, specifically the Hudson River Valley and area around Niagara Falls. Provenance: From the estate of Arthur B. de Saint Maurice, the great-grandson of Regis Gignoux.
Condition
Light layer of surface dirt, pinhole visible at all four corners of the canvas, scratching to lower right corner.
