**First Time At Auction**

West Africa, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia, Kissi peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A fantastic gathering of 51 iron 'pennies' formed with twisting bodies, a flattened blade on one end known as a kodo or 'foot,' and a T-shaped projection on the opposite end known as a nling or 'ear.' Each penny is enveloped with thick iron patina. Pennies like these examples are highly abstract representations of deceased ancestors, and the Kissi people believed that each penny held a soul. If the penny broke, the loss of the soul contained within inherently devalued the currency piece. Size of largest: 13.4" L x 1.4" W (34 cm x 3.6 cm)
