Description
**First Time At Auction**
West Africa, Burkina Faso, Mossi Tribe, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figure depicting an abstract anthropomorphic figure known by Mossi girls as a biiga (literally "child") doll. The nude figure has a flared base and a corseted body incised with linear motifs, pendulous breasts draped in front of a delineated clavicle, and an elongated neck with zigzagging incisions. The head features additional incised striations as well as a crested coiffure with segmented grooves. Size: 1.9" W x 8.125" H (4.8 cm x 20.6 cm); 8.375" H (21.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, acquired in April 1989 from Sotheby's, New York; ex-Irwin Hersey collection, acquired from Tom Wheelock

Condition
Minor nicks to head and body, with one stable hairline fissure to coiffure crest, and light fading to original pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Great remains of pigment throughout.
