Late Meiji boxwood netsuke of a crate of mandarin oranges with ropes around it. Fantastic quality work, wonderful rendition of the crate, rope and orange textures. Fruits are inlaid with staghorn stained green. The crate is inlaid with a plaque inscribed OTOSHIDAMA (New Year’s gift). Even-grained boxwood, beautiful patina. Signed TOSHU in seal form on the bottom - the artist is listed on p. 1179 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Identical model is illustrated in MASTERPIECES OF NETSUKE ART: One Thousand Favorites of Leading Collectors by Bernard Hurtig, number 182. Excellent piece in Japanese taste. Length 1 3/16 inches.
