天牛置物以鐵為材，採多組件鐵打出技術接合製作，表現寫實。頭部凸起圓眼，鞭狀觸角自額上凸起，向後延伸覆蓋於背部，觸角接合精細，可活動。背部略扁，兩對翅膀可開合，內層翅膀刻細長線紋，並於其一內面刻有作者「好山」銘款，外層翅膀表面雕琢尖刺狀紋理。下承三對足，各脛節用鉚釘接續，趾端呈 Y 字形。整體鑿刻精細，靈動傳神。

自在置物是以動物、昆蟲、甚至人體骨骼結構為題材，利用鐵、銅、銀等材質，透過鍛金、鑄金、彫金、象嵌等多重金工技法，將作品本身之關節分割成多個可活動機能，整體既逼真又富表現力。此種工法複雜、曠日費時的藝術品在明治二十六年（1893 年）芝加哥萬國博覽會，板尾新次郎的自在鷲首次展出後，立即成為眾人焦點，並競相收藏。因此，自明治後半到二戰前的五十年間，自在置物名工作品多半流出至海外。在各類自在置物中，鐵自在天牛甚為少見，僅於 1992 年瑞典私人收藏展曾有出現，根據東京藝術大學美術館教授原田一敏之研究資料顯示，目前法國、日本、美國幾間美術館所藏自在天牛分別為四分一（矓銀）或銀質，以鐵為材者極為珍罕。

江戶時期，自在置物的技術以明珍系甲冑師的作品為大宗，明治時期轉為京都高瀬好山的工房開始生產。依據好山自錄「好山高瀬虎吉氏的履歷」所記載：「好山出生於明治二年（1869 年）九月二十三日金澤市，明治十六年任職神戶貿易商，池田清助的輸出品製造陶器部。明治二十年（1887 年）京都支店設立後，好山便被轉派至京都支店金工部工房，同時開始和富木伊助學習金工。明治二十六年（1893 年）獨立後，開始以金工品為主的國内外販賣事業。從大正到昭和初期開始於內國博覽會展出作品、致力於京都工藝品產業振興發展，並且擔任許多展覽會審查員。」
