Magnificent and Monumental Carved and Painted Figure of Guanyin, 1450-1495, with 18th and 19th c. embellishments, crafted of bai and camphor wood with layers of polychrome lacquer and pure pigment, with glass, onyx and pearl detail, figure has twenty-six arms, the hands represent eternity and each hand holds a different symbol or attribute, the figure sitting loose on the original cloud form stand, Figure: 31" x 40" x 13", Base: 19" x 38" x 16", Assembled: 51" x 40" x 18". Evidence of old repair to hands and objects.Exhibited at the Palace Museum, Shanghai and Imperial Museum, Xian; on loan from the Wang Family Foundation, 1994-1996, through the Art in Embassies U.S. Department of State program. Provenance: Collections of William Walker & descendants; Walker Foundation; and Wang Family Foundation.
