Description
Gian Paolo Barbieri (b. 1938) first worked in cinema and theatre and as a self-taught photographer. He collaborated as an apprentice for Harper’s Bazaar and what would soon become Vogue Italia during the 1960s. Innovative in the choice of his settings and stylings, he developed an influential personal style, rigorous and sensual. The role of fashion editor had not been fully created in the 1960s, and Barbieri had to find the best setting for his photographs and create the hairstyles, makeup, and jewellery. This could led to the use of unusual materials, a notable example being earrings made with table tennis balls painted in a mother-of-pearl colour.
