Description
Franz Sigel requests reports on Generals Pope and McClellan
1p, 7.25" x 9.75", signed "F. Sigel/Maj. Gen.", dated January 30, 1864 and addressed to Major General Robert Schenck (misspelled Schenk). Writing from headquarters at Reading, Pennsylvania, Sigel requests a report on General Pope and McClellan's Virginia Campaign. It reads in full:
"As it is in your power as chairman of Military committee to get all reports made public by the War Department, you would to me a great favor by sending me the report of General Pope on his campaign in Virginia and that of General McClellan, just now published. I do not believe that I can get these reports from other sources, as I have written several times for them to Washington.
Very resp. and truly yours,
F. Sigel
Mag. Gen.
P.S. Did you not hear, whether I have to continue in the Coal Region for the end of my days or the end of the War?"
Franz Sigel (1824-1902) was a German military officer immigrated to the United States and became a newspaperman, politician, and officer in the U. S. Army. Impressed by his ability to recruit German immigrants into the Union Army, Abraham Lincoln made Sigel a Major General. However, numerous catastrophic mistakes in the field led Sigel to be replaced in mid-1864, and he spent the rest of the war on the proverbial sidelines. Following the war, he served in numerous political roles and was publisher and editor of the New York Monthly.
Flattened mail folds, with light soiling throughout. Minor chipping and paper loss at edges. Boldly signed.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.?
