Jack Kerouac's Personally Owned Russian Carved Mahogany Covered Jar, from His Estate
An ornately carved covered jar personally owned by Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), the famous mid-century American writer who brought us "On The Road" (1957). Provenance: The lot will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executor of the Kerouac Estate by descent. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife.
A mahogany cylindrical covered jar made in Russia, ca. 1890-1920. The lid depicts a stylized six-pointed flower with geometric cuttings, and a zig zag pattern along the lid edge. Stamped "Made in Russia" on the underside of the cover. Expected wear consistent with age including isolated surface loss, superficial scuffs, and minor checking. Else very good to near fine. 2.625" high, 2.875" diameter.
