Description
Tibetan thangka depicting Akshobhya Buddha Surrounded by 200 Green and White Taras, c.17th century, gouache on cotton, 32.5 x 21 inches, in a cherry wood frame 41 x 31 inches. Central figure in deep blue, right hand with earth touching mudra and holding gold vajra, left hand empty and palm up on lap, lotus cushion supported by two elephants, red and orange nimbus and green aureole, surrounded by 200 forms of alternating seated Green (Shyama) and White (Sita) Taras. Likely originally produced as one of a set of five thangkas, which would total 1,000 Taras, and allusion to the "Time of 1,000 Buddhas." See following lot for a second thangka from this set. Condition
