Description
Tibetan thangka depicting Ratnasambhava Buddha Surrounded by 200 Green and White Taras, c.17th century, gouache on cotton, 32.5 x 21 inches, in a cherry wood frame 41 x 31 inches. Central figure in yellow, right hand over knee with open palm, left hand in middle of lap with meditation mudra, lotus cushion supported by two horses, blue and orange nimbus and blue and green aureoles, surrounded by 200 forms of alternating seated Green (Shyama) and White (Sita) Taras. Likely originally produced as one of a set of five thangkas, which would total 1,000 Taras, and allusion to the "Time of 1,000 Buddhas." See preceding lot for a second thangka from this set. Condition
