Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine spear and canoe prow ornament, hand-built from several painted bark panels which are fastened together with reed strands. The three-pronged prow ornament has a myriad of painted decorations in orange, black, and white hues, with ovoid panels set against a solid orange ground, and a carved wooden mask fastened in the center. A thin spear accompanies the ornament and is formed from natural bamboo with two of the original four barb-shaped spear tips still secured to the top. Size of largest (ornament): 31.5" W x 36" H (80 cm x 91.4 cm).

Condition
Losses to two of four spear prongs. Minor nicks and abrasions to verso and peripheries of prow ornament as well as spear, with fading and chipping to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits and patina throughout.
