Description
**First Time At Auction**
North Africa, Morocco, Berber peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hefty pottery jar of a simple and attractive form with an apple-shaped body, a pair of semicircular handles, and a corseted neck topped with a flared rim. The body is decorated with intricate, minimalist linear motifs that zigzag around the circumference, slender orange-red columns flanked with pairs of black dots, and wider lattice-pattern columns that stretch between the midsection and the zigzagging register coursing around the upper shoulder. Both handles bear thick black lateral stripes, and the neck and rim are painted with a solid layer of black pigment. Vessels like these were used to store large volumes of liquids in the desert heat with little evaporation. Size: 17.25" W x 18.7" H (43.8 cm x 47.5 cm)

Condition
Minor nicks and abrasions to base, body, handles, and neck, with light encrustations, and fading to areas of original pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and remains of pigment throughout.
